The Housing Choice Voucher program provides eligible households with vouchers to help pay rent on homes of their choosing.  A family receiving a voucher typically pays 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent, with the program paying the remaining portion.  The vouchers are generally available through local (city) housing authorities.

There are some special purpose vouchers that are available only on a referral basis.  These include:

VASH - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers

NED or Mainstream - for non-elderly persons (under age 62) who are living with a disability

FUP - Family Unification Program - for persons aging out of foster care

EHV - Emergency Housing Vouchers and Stability Vouchers - for individuals and families who are at risk of domestic violence and homelessness.
